Elementary

The Academic Program

January 26, 2007

At La Pryor Elementary School students spend time with math, reading, language arts, science and social studies every day. The State of Texas has developed a comprehensive list of knowledge and skills that students are expected to learn. All grade levels focus on a set of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) each 9 weeks.

Children begin learning the skills for reading at pre-kindergarten and a balanced literacy approach to teaching reading and writing is followed. Balanced literacy connects reading, writing, language development and phonemic awareness to each other. We have a grammar and writing focus every 9 weeks that includes editing, journal and composition writing.

Other activities offered throughout the week are:

*Physical Education/Health, grades Pk-6
*Music, grades Pk-6
*Library, Pk-6
*Computer Lab, Pk-6

Throughout the year students will participate in character education and conflict resolution education.
