Selection Procedure and Criterion

According to the NHS constitution, "The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools."

Local chapters of NHS are given authority to vary from some sections of this document:

National Honor Society Constitution

At LPHS, in accordance with the National Constitution, to be considered for selection, a student must:

  • Be a member of those classes (sophomore, junior, senior) designated as eligible in the chapter bylaws (Freshmen [ninth graders] are not eligible.)
  • Have been in attendance at the school the equivalent of one semester
  • Be nominated by a teacher


The selection of each member to the chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council.
The criterion for selection into NHS is based on the following:

Scholarship –

Students are expected to have and maintain an average of 90% or better

 

Leadership –

Holding office or position

A leader in the classroom, at work, or in other school or community activities

Exemplifies positive attitudes

Demonstrates academic initiative (self-learners, college courses, etc.)

Exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals and spirit

Is dependable in any responsibility accepted

 

Service –

Participates in some activity outside of school

Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students (e.g., Mentors, Works well with others, volunteers and provided dependable assistance)

Is willing to represent the class or school in interclass and interscholastic competition

 

Character –

Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously

Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior

Regularly shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others

Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing an unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others.
